Goodbye August

Wow! We have made it to the end of August, it has been a busy month and action packed here in our classroom.  Not only did we have two guest speakers this week, we also have all now taken home our Reading Journals and almost all of us have had a chance to go on the Ipads and check out RazKids. RazKids lets us listen to stories and answer comprehension questions, it even lets us record ourselves and then we can listen back to our own voices telling the story. It is pretty cool!

Check us out on the Ipads

Reading Journals
Everyone was very excited to get their very own Reading Journal.  We got to pick three books to take home and we have been learning our first 5 sight words along with 3 letters for phonics.

Guest Speaker

A big thank you to Rebecca Konrad - Renia's Mum who came to share her "friend Story" with us on Thursday morning.  The children were very interested in Rebecca's friend Dede who she met in Africa 18 years ago.  They are still now very good friends and Dede will be visiting Phnom Penh in October.  We may even get to meet her!

Language
At the beginning of the week we like to do a recount of our weekend activities in our writing journals.  We get to draw a picture of what we did and then we all try our best with some help from the teachers to write a sentence about what we drew.

Also this week we have been very busy with our sight words and letter sounds. We practiced writing the first five sight words, and as a group we tried to say a sentence each using one of those words in it.  We also went around the school looking for things that started with the same letter as our three phonics letters S, A and T.  We then drew them and even made some out of play dough!  That was really fun!

Maths
We did a very fun activity where we had to find out who had the longest name in our class.  We all wrote our name and then cut out each letter and glued it onto our poster chart.  Once everyone had their name on the chart we counted the letters in each name.  Dita used her very long name Amarakmudita and was the winner with 12 letters!

We also made maths stories - We made two groups and then joined them together to see how much we had altogether.

 Unit of inquiry

We made some fabulous posters that showed people being really good friends.
We worked together as a group and presented them to the class.

First Assembly

We had a whole Elementary School Assembly this Friday where all the new children to ISPP introduced themselves.  Well done to Anton, Elena, Visal, Wonglee and Champa for being so brave.

And last but certainly not least we helped Carla celebrate her birthday on Tuesday.  A very Happy Birthday to you!

Have a great weekend everyone and see you on Monday.

Elle the Elephant

Ms Ashley visited us again to share a little more about the "Gecko Wheel". We talked about what a friend is.  We were also very excited to meet Ms Ashley's friend Elle the Elephant.  She was very shy at first, but after we started to introduce ourselves and ask her a few questions she was very talkative. We found out that we actually had lots in common.

Guest Speaker

We had our first guest speaker on Tuesday.  A big thank you to Thilde Skaanning - Anton's Mum, who came in to share with us her "friend story".  The children thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and were very excited to have someones Mum in the class.  We were very surprised to learn that Thilde still has a friend Cille who she meet when she was in Preschool and they are still best friends!!

The children are learning the difference between a question and a statement/story.  They are trying very hard to ask questions to get more information and knowledge. We look forward to welcoming Rebecca Konrad - Renia's Mum on Thursday morning.

Another great week!

We have had another very busy week in KG.  We have been very lucky to have Ms Ashley come to our class to start teaching us all about the "Gecko Wheel." We watched a very cool clip about what it means to be a friend and how it makes you feel.  We all really enjoyed it.  We also drew pictures inside a body shape of what it means to be a good friend and then we shared them together.

Here we are talking about how to be a good friend.

Drawing pictures of how to be a good friend.

Busy at work.
Sharing our pictures together.
We were all being really good friends by listening to each other.
Concentrating on what our friend is saying.

Maths

We have also been busy learning about gathering data and how to put that information onto graphs.  We did lots of surveys in our class.  We found out what kind of pets we have, what is our favourite flavour of ice cream, how many scoops of ice cream we can eat and the colour of our clothes that we were wearing.  We first made a Tally Chart to gather the information and we then graphed this information on a bar graph.  It was fun.

We also managed to get ourselves into order from the tallest in the class to the shortest in the class.

We have also been doing a lot of counting.  We have been counting all the way to 100!  We have also been learning to count in 2s, 5s and 10s.  We have been finding numbers all around our classroom and practising writing numbers and showing the value of the number with blocks and counters.  It was really fun working as a group to make the numbers 1 - 10 out of play dough, but it was a little bit tricky when we had to try and find really big numbers on the 1 - 100 chart.

Language

This week we have been concentrating on the letters s, a and t.  We have been practising writing them, saying the letter sounds and finding things in the classroom that start with these letters.  We have also been practising writing our names.  We made them out of play dough which was really fun.

PE & Swimming

We have so much fun in PE and Swimming time.  Look at us swimming over and under the "shark cages" and running around and under the parachute.

Sharing our friend pictures.

Thanks so much to everyone who sent in a photo with your child or emailed me with one.  The children had a great time sharing them with everyone in the class.  It was really nice to listen to the stories about the friends in the pictures and what makes them such good friends.
