Reflection....

This week everyone has been working so hard on their research projects. Each student has been focussing on an animal from the ocean and creating headings that will guide their research. The aim is that by the end everyone will have made a non fiction text to teach people about their chosen animal. Especially concentrating on the issues that their animals face and how we might be able to help them.

We're really looking forward to sharing these with you at our student-led-conference coming soon.

We also spent time reflecting on our field trip this week and the things that we saw, thought about and wondered.

Check out each groups reflections:

Chin Hao, Samnang and Somnang.

Maele, Somphoas and Magalie.

Micah, Benjamin and Enzo.

Oan and Clement.

Shae and Lucy.

Simon, Noel, Alan and Liam.

Vannissa and Thai Hak.

Vincent, Peng Peng and Jennita.

It's never to late to sign up to read to the class! We have many spots available, so please don't be shy. Come and share as tory with 22 very careful listeners who LOVE being read too.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Field Trip!

We had such a great time on our field trip. The river side had lots for us to look at and we wrote down - What we see, What we think and What we wonder.

Aeon supermarket also had a lot to explore! We had a bit of trouble with photos so here are the ones we did manage to get :-)

A very big thank you to all the Mums and Dads who came to help us on the trip. They did a great job guiding the children around the supermarket and helping them to locate all the items on the checklist. I hope you all received your 'thank you' cards!

We finished the day sharing our snacks that we bought from Aeon Mall!!

Sharing the planet!

The finished product!
A huge team effort was put into creating and organising our ocean mural. We researched the different zones of the ocean and which animals live or hangout in these zones. We used books, the internet and our prior knowledge to draw the animals and locate their correct zone.

This is displayed outside our classroom for you all to enjoy.

We wrote and drew the positive and negative effects humans have on the ocean:

We organised many different items on a table - glass and plastic bottles, plastic bags, polystyrene, cardboard, cans etc. This is what each group did with those items.

Each group had a unique way of looking at the items and as a group they worked out how they wanted to categorise them. I was really impressed by the discussions and how they organised the items!

We also discussed 'How we are all responsible for the ocean' and added out thinkings to the wonder wall.

We also had two students in our class who took action by creating awareness posters about the ocean. Well done Alan and Vannissa, your posters are fantastic! Plus we had MaĆ«le share a video with us of what she saw in the ocean when she was snorkelling in Thailand. It was very cool to watch. Thanks for sharing :-)

Finding out....

This week we were very lucky to have a secondary teacher, Ms Ethel come and speak to us. She is a very experienced diver and shared with us first hand what it is like exploring the ocean and what you might see.

Ms Ethel explained to us that when you're diving you need to move slowly through the water so that you don't disturb the animals or use up too much of your oxygen. She also told us the most important rule of all - "Never touch anything in the ocean, we can look but we must never touch." Ask your child why we can't touch things in the ocean.

We also watched a video of a young girl going for her first dive. The children in Grade One were amazed at what they saw on the dive. A big thank you to Ms Ethel for taking the time to come and speak to us.

Finding Out

In the afternoon we had four centres that we rotated around. We had a great time building on our prior knowledge and recording the things that we have learnt so far.

We are creating a mural for outside our classroom and our buddies gave us a helping hand:

We went on an app called 'Bitsboard' & Oceans and listened to information and played interactive games about the ocean:

We wrote and drew the positive and negative effects humans have on the ocean:

Mystery Reader

A  vey big thank you to Fredrik (Vincent's Dad) for coming in to be our mystery reader! We were very lucky to have two books read to us, especially when one of the books is by one of our favourite authors Mo Willems! Our class just love the Piggy and Gerald books and were delighted to get the chance to listen to one with Fredrik. The second book was a play on numbers with the title - 'Seven ate nine!' The children thoroughly enjoyed both stories and are looking forward to having Fredrik back again :-)

Opposite Day

Great morning dressed up today! We had all sorts of costumes - Mr Barry, backwards clothes, princesses, Halloween and even had a few Ms Kelly's!!

Enjoy your long weekend everyone and see you back at school on Monday!

Tuning in....

We started to inquiry into our new unit on 'Oceans' this week. I was so impressed with what the children already know! We spent time tuning in with various activities and had great discussions about what an ocean is and what they are used for. I know that these discussions will lead into more inquiry from the children as they start to wonder and question what is happening in our oceans.

Provocation in the piazza - This was set up to get the students to just start thinking about the ocean and how we use it.

I had some fantastic conversations with many of the children about what they could see, what did it make them think about and what did it make them wonder. The questions they were asking were so interesting and very intriguing. I'm looking forward to diving deeper into this unit to see where they are going to take this inquiry!

We are working on an ocean mural, a deep sea door to the class, ocean words and inhabitants of the ocean. Check us out exploring, questioning and wondering this week.

We also watched 2 clips from Youtube of the 'Wet Market' here in Phnom Penh. The children did a visible thinking activity where they wrote down - What I see,
what this makes me think about and what this makes me wonder. Watch the clips with your child and ask them what they - see, think and wonder about the market. You may also want to share with your child what you see, think and wonder too. The child had some really fantastic things to say!

This is what we See, Think and Wonder:

Have a great weekend everyone!
