Grade One are Taking Action!

Over the past few weeks the outstanding Grade One KD class decided to take it upon themselves to start practicing a "show" during morning tea and lunchtime breaks. They organised it all themselves and gave each other roles and scripts! As a teacher, it was so cool to see my class being so proactive and take a leadership role in organising and preforming a "show". They had ownership and developed the action of their learning which was awesome!

I would also like to give a "a shout out" to Mr Andy who is the class PE teacher for giving the students the freedom in class to explore and develop their "show". Especially since at the moment in PE they have been doing dance! Perfect timing :-) Or inspired?

Enjoy the videos:

To end our Unit on 'Express Yourself' the students did the gallery walk through all the Grade One classes and chose a piece of art that they wanted to respond to. We had many different responses - we had drawings, 3D sculptures, paintings, music composed, dances, lego, clay and modelling clay models. It was fantastic to see the many different ways that the students expressed the way the art made them feel.

Please note the students that responded by creating a piece of music or a dance have had their videos posted on their individual page.

We started our new Unit of Inquiry this week on Communication. We have been doing a lot of tuning in activities to see what prior knowledge the students have already. They know lots about communication devices and are already very savvy on Ipads and mobile devices :-)

Brainstorming all of our knowledge.

Please also check under your child's individual page to see a video that they made in small groups about communication devices.

Lot's going on!

This week saw the Grade Ones complete their summative assessment for our Unit - How We Express Ourselves. It was fantastic to see how much the students had learnt and the different ways that they could express their emotions through the Arts.

On Tuesday we did a 'Gallery Walk' with the other Grade One classes and each student had to choose one piece of Art that they felt they could respond too.

Once each student had chosen a piece of Art they had to reflect on how it made them feel and how they would respond to it. They all worked very hard over the week to create their responses through another form of Art. Watch the blog for pictures soon :-)

Language

Our class love getting their spelling words at the beginning of the week and everyone tries very hard to learn their words before Friday. This week we have had fun getting outside and skipping our spelling words and writing them big in chalk. Makes learning them fun!

We have also been having lots of fun in Maths working with 2D and 3D shapes.

Have a fabulous long weekend everyone!

Our week!

After such a busy week last week it was nice to get back into our usual routines. We still however, made time to record our Kamishibai's with our buddies so please take a look under the individual pages on the side to check them out.

This week in Maths we have been talking a lot about 2D and 3D shapes. We can identify the properties of shapes and explain what shapes can do. Does the shape roll, slide and stack? How many faces, edges and corners do they have. Are the faces and edges straight or curved?

We even managed to make all sorts of shapes with our bodies.

We have even been practicing drawing 2D and 3D shapes with great success.

On Wednesday we were lucky enough to go over to the Secondary school and talk to some artists in Grade 12. We spoke to them about their art work and discussed how their art made us feel. We also enjoyed learning about what the artist was trying to portray through their art.

Since it was 'Fun Friday' we decided that some free choice time was in order. We are very creative here in Grade One.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Book Week + 100 Days of school!

How to express your emotions....

The Grade One classes got together for an afternoon of experiencing different ways to express themselves through dance. They got to experience a Khmer dance, the Haka from New Zealand, Break Dancing and the Hula. It was heaps of fun and really got the students talking about the different emotions that dances can make you feel.

Here are the things the students need to think about during the session.

We had a turn too.

The Haka from New Zealand was a completely different experience for the students. They all said it was scary but it made them feel strong and brave when they had a turn at preforming it. A proud moment for this Kiwi teacher :-)

Break dancing and the Hula were also a hit with the students. I think we have some awesome dancers in Grade One as you would have seen from our assembly :-)

Drama

Ms Lizzie and Ms Sita who are the secondary drama teachers came over to share with us ways we can use our bodies to express emotions.

We had a great time learning to use all of these components and create some dramatic scenes.

Last Friday our Grade Ones put on a brilliant display of their learning. I was so proud of all the children for all the time and hard work they put into the assembly to make it just right. Also a very big thank you to Ms Dana for the puzzle art pieces, Ms Leigh for the music to accompany, Mr Jon for playing the guitar so well for our song and Mr Andy for our awesome PE dance!

Well Done Grade One you were all awesome!!

We have lots of photos from assembly. Thank you to some of our grade 5 buddies for taking them :-)
