Connecting Globally #travellingtales

Created by Joel Bevan

We are so excited to be part of this amazing opportunity to connect globally with other schools to tell a tale. The children have already been talking about how cool it is that we get to communicate with people all over the world even though we have never met them face to face. I have to agree, it is pretty cool!! :-)

We are joining up with four other schools around the world to be part of a digitally created progressive book. A class in Luxembourg are starting the story off for us. Each class has two days to create their part of the story. From Luxembourg it was off to America, then onto Switzerland and now it has arrived with us here in Cambodia. We watched their parts of the story this afternoon and it was awesome! Our story is called "The talking fridge' and we were really excited about the characters, setting, build up and problem that they had created.

Now it's our turn! Our job is to write the resolution and try to solve the problems that have happened in the story. We had a fantastic time today brainstorming all sorts of ideas. We finally agreed on where we would like the story to go and chose illustrations to add to the digital tale. We created our slides and tomorrow we're doing the voice recording.....stay tuned!!

Once our two days are up we will send the story onto another school in America, where they will be adding on from where we left off. There job is to create a conclusion to the tale.

The final product will be posted here on our blog, twitter and Youtube. We are very excited about seeing the finished product!!

For more information please check out this Youtube video and talk to your child about what we are doing. They really are very excited to be communicating globally with other classrooms and collaborating on this tale.

Tabloid Sports & Pchum Ben!

We had a great morning participating in the 'Tabloid Sports' events run by the secondary students. We had so much fun running, jumping, throwing, catching and even sliding! Take a look at our photos :-)

Slip & Slide

On Friday afternoon we had a special treat. Mr Borey, Ms Chark Rya, Ms Nhoep and Ms Khoma organised 3 rotations to help the children understand the celebration that is happening in Cambodia this week - Pchum Ben. Mr Borey helped to explain the different rituals that people do at the pagodas and were shown the kinds of offerings they make. The children had lots of questions and were really interested about the Cambodian peoples beliefs.

The children had a great time and really enjoyed experiencing some of the culture that comes with living in Cambodia. We coloured a pagoda and folded lotus flowers too :-) Special thanks to the fantastic TA's!

Have a great holiday everyone!

Our Week....

We started the week with a load of fun in PE with Ms. Leticia The children worked collaboratively to get their heart rate pumping. There were lots of laughs and excitement from everyone!

Reading

We have been doing guided reading in class and have been enjoying reading books together and talking about what we see in the pictures and what we think the story is about. We have also been doing lots of work on our sight & spelling words during language time and doing various activities on the books that we have been reading.

Balanced Lifestyle

Our Unit of Inquiry into 'Making Choices & Healthy Living' is coming to an end but we have learnt a lot about how to keep ourselves balanced:

1.) Eat healthy food
2.) Exercise
3.) Keep ourselves clean
4.) Wash our hands before eating and after the toilet
5.) Limit the time on a screen
6.) Get fresh air
7.) Brush our teeth
8.) Keep our minds active

In PE we were balanced:

In class we worked with Mr. Jon to decide what we thought were healthy choices and unhealthy choices:

The students explained why they put their picture or word where they did. We also had some students that didn't agree with each other and that led to great discussions about the different perspectives you can take from a picture.

We then walked around the class with a picture or word to find our balance. For example: if I ate a cookie then I might do some physical activity to balance that out.

On Thursday's we visit the Library. It is a really nice time for us all to have some quiet time and look through the books, read to each other and of course have a read aloud. We love reading here in our class :-)

Self Assessment - PE

On Friday the students did a range of activities in PE to assess their heart rate and what exercises made their heart beat faster and what slowed it down.

Great house team spirt on Friday too!

For your information

Next week is a 3 day week for the students. On Wednesday morning they will take part in a tabloid sports event. Students will need to wear their house T-shirts and bring a change of clothes as they may get wet.
There is no school for students on Thursday and Friday.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Making Choices

Another busy week here in Grade One with lots of learning, going over routines, making great bonds with classmates, connections to past knowledge and building on what we already know! Phew, we have been busy!!

Maths

We have been collecting data to graph. This week all the students came up with their own questions that they would like to ask their classmates. What's your favourite ice cream flavour? What colour are your eyes? What colour car do you like? Who is your favourite super hero? and many more. Once they had collected their data they had to show the results on a bar graph. They all did a fabulous job!

We also had Maths centres during the week where we rotated around different activities.

Unit of Inquiry

On Wednesday afternoon we did 4 rotations which saw the students move around the grade one teachers to learn about making choices and healthy living. The students enjoyed various activities including yoga, learning how sweating helps to cool our bodies down, how lungs work and a great app that shows us what happens inside our bodies. The students are writing a recount of these rotations and they will be posted onto Seesaw this week. Keep any eye out for the notification.

On Fridays we always have a bit of fun to end the week. We have been doing activities where we have to interact and co-operate with each other. This helps to build a sense of community in the class where we are all comfortable to share play and learn.

Please do check out Seesaw this week for updates on Art, PE and our recount writing :-)
