Our Week!

We have had a great week here in Grade One! We had lots of fun with our friends in and outside the classroom and we also managed to catch up with our buddies to share pyjama day fun.

In Maths we reviewed 2D shapes and started inquiry into 3D shapes. The children practiced decomposing and composing 2D shapes in different ways. They also had a lot of fun working with 3D shapes and discovering the properties that make up each shape. Please check under your child's individual page for shapes created using their bodies.

Mr Jon was in our class this week and we were introduced to narratives. We started looking at lots of different stories and discussing what features make up a narrative. We talked about fantasy fiction and realistic fiction and what the difference is between them. Ask your child if they can tell you.

Also with Mr Jon we learnt about different ways to sort out words. With a partner the children were given a set of cards. Together we talked about what each picture was and what a,e,i,o and u were. In pairs the children had to decide how to sort the pictures. It was very interesting to see how they approached the task and the different ways they could organise them.

We went to the Art room on Wednesday to collaborate with Ms Dana and learn more about how Vincent van Gogh painted. We saw many examples of how he used colour and movement in his pictures. We discussed how the paintings made us feel and the colours we would use to express different emotions and feelings.

We are going to create our very own Van Gogh inspired pieces! We will be sharing those with you once completed.

Pyjama day was great fun and we started our day off with our Grade 4 buddies.

Mystery Reader & Birthday Celebrations!

A very big thank you to Shae's Grandma for coming in last Wednesday to be our mystery reader. She read us two lovely books that tied in perfectly with our new Unit of Inquiry. The first book she read to us was about a little rabbit who wanted to give a valentines card to his friend but had all sorts of fears and emotions about the card he had made. Secondly we listened to the classic 'Guess how much I love you?' One of my favourite books :-)

If you or any of your family and friends visiting would like to come in and be our 'Mystery Reader' please sign up. The children thoroughly enjoy having different people come in and share stories with them.

We also helped our very good friend Micah celebrate his seventh birthday on Monday. A very happy birthday to you Micah and thanks so much for the delicious cupcakes :-)

Dress up Day!

This Thursday the Student Council are running a dress up day. Students are encouraged to wear their Pyjama's to school. Please note that our class does have PE at 8:15 in the morning. If your child does come to school in Pyjama's they are more than welcome to get changed into their PE kit for class or come to school in PE kit and get changed after that into pyjamas.

Our final week of Semester One!

We have just completed our second week of Semester Two here in Grade One. We took a look back over all the things that we have done in our first Semester. Wow, we were really busy!! We couldn't quite believe all the things that we had learnt, read, wrote and created.

Here are a few of our highlights of the last week of Semester One. We went out in style :-)

Sports Day

What a great morning we had. Thanks so much to all the parents who came out to support their child and the class. We all had such a great time.

Our Trip to the Post Office

We had a good look around at the Post Office. We saw lots of interesting things and even got to post our own letters. We talked about how long we thought the letters might take to make it back to school. We were very lucky and surprised to have our letters waiting here at school for us after we got back from our winter break!

Some of the interesting things we saw at the post office were huge rooms full of packages and letters, the post boxes, stamps, international telephones, mail boxes, motorbikes and vans for package delivery and the system for weighing a parcel and wrapping it up in tape.

Here is a quick slideshow of our trip.

Assembly

Well done Grade One you were all awesome!!

Our Grade Ones put on a brilliant display of their learning. I was so proud of all the children for all the time and hard work they put into the assembly to make it just right. Enjoy the photos.

Shared Snack

We had such a nice afternoon sharing snacks with the whole of Grade One, we had some much to eat!! Thank you to everyone for the delicious food.

Welcome Back!

It was great to see all of the children back at school this week! They all had so much to share about their holidays, we spent a lot of time on Monday morning listening to each other sharing our exciting adventures. We also wrote all about it in our journal writing books.

We had a great week just getting back into our routines and catching up with our friends. We started tuning into our new Unit of Inquiry - 'How we Express ourselves through the Arts.' We talked about the different ways we can express how we feel by using facial expressions. See if you can figure out what we are feeling??

'Express Yourself!'
