What is your favorite time of the day?

Art- Grade 1- Unit 4
How, why, and when do we work together to make art?
We found out that working together takes many social skills including compromise, cooperation, and good communication.  We worked together not just to create art, but also to investigate new art skills, brainstorm ideas for artworks, and evaluate our artworks.  Using the “Creative Cycle” helped us to record our process of art making each time we worked with a new group.

My song is about a frog.  In my song the frog is jumping, swimming, hiccups, eating and laying eggs.

Unit 3: Music and Drama - Express Yourself
During our music time, explored mime and music and how they connect to emotions.

We chose to create music using our bodies.  Can you guess the emotion that the music represents?

Art- Grade 1- Unit 3
How can I make connections between my emotions and my artistic creations?  During my 3rd unit in art, I explored ways of planning and creating abstract sculptures to express different emotional experiences from my life.  I used lines, shapes and colors that represented my feelings using a variety of art materials.  I also learned how to use mindfulness exercises to connect to my emotions using my mind and body.  Here are some examples of my art making throughout this unit of inquiry:




"This artwork is about Mr. Proud. In Mr. Proud's day, he went to school and told someone to stop doing something, then he went back to his class and he worked and he worked hard. And in his free choice time he shared something. I showed the emotion by using feathers because they kind of make me proud and I used spiky lines for low proud because it's kind of makes me feel low proud. And the high proud is wiggly lines because they can make me very proud, drawing something like that. And for the medium proud it's a straight line because a straight line is kind of like the medium of something."

My Crazy Hair!

Shapes are everywhere!
Now we are extending our shapes investigation to 3D.

We have been exploring 2D Shapes. Look at the different shapes we found around our school.

Art- Grade 1- Unit 2
What inspires artists to create?  This is the question we asked in art this unit.  I chose a book that inspired me from the library.  Then I mapped out words, colors, lines, and shapes to describe my inspiration picture.  I used this plan to create an abstract glue and chalk artwork connected to my inspiration.  Here are some pictures of my art making process:



Music, Unit 2: Artistic Me

After choosing our picture for our inspiration, we thought about words that described our picture, words that said what the picture was doing and what was in the picture.  We then tried to give these words musical sounds.  Below is our composition that was inspired by our picture.  You can find the picture I chose in my music book.



COMMUNICATION
We found different ways that we can communicate to each other.



Unit 1 Music - Notating Rhythms

Our first unit was about learning music notation for rhythms.  After composing our own rhythms, we then collaborated to compose a new piece of music.  Here we are playing our piece of music.



Art- Grade 1- Unit 1

In art classes, we explored what an “art medium” is and which we preferred.  We investigated why an artist might use charcoal, watercolor, printmaking or clay when they make art.  I thought carefully about which art medium to use each class and why.  Here are some photos of my art making process throughout the unit.

  1. Micah does a great job expressing himself in writing. We were impressed with his story and its pictures. There was an introduction of characters, the presentation of a problem (with the lion approaching the family) and a resolution of the problem (family hiding in the bush). We were also very impressed with the research Micah conducted about the Beluga whale. When presenting these things to us, we can see that Micah is growing in confidence though we still need to prod him a bit with questions. I'm sure he will continue to grow in his ability to pro-actively explain to us what he has learned. Great job Micah!! Mommy and Daddy are very proud of you and all that you are doing in Grade 1!!
