New School Year!

Welcome to the new school year in Grade One with Ms Kelly & Mr Borey.

Please be sure to check this blog every Friday to see all the fun and exciting things we have been doing.

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of last week were busy days for Mr Borey and I as we got the classroom organised for all the children to arrive on Monday. The campus is looking fantastic and I know all the children are really excited to be back and enjoying catching up with their friends and making new ones too :-)

Last Post!

Congratulations to all the G1 KD children for surviving Grade One! We have had a fantastic year with an amazing amount of learning done. It is always very hard to say goodbye to friends and sadly we had two students leaving us here at ISPP. Oan and Simon we wish you all the very best on your new adventures and I hope we can meet each other again in the future.

Unfortunately Simon left our class while I was away, but today Oan bravely took on the raft at our final assembly ;-)

Together as a class we have grown as a community of learners, risk takers and greatest of friends. It is with pride I see my fantastic Grade One students move forward to continue their learning journey in Grade Two. This also comes with a touch of sadness, but lucky for me I will be just across the hallway so I can still see them all :-)

To all the parents thank you very much for your kind words, I am very lucky!! It has been an absolute pleasure to teach every single one of the children in my class this year!! I have seen them learn and grow into amazing inquirers who are so eager to experience new adventures. I look forward to seeing many of them again next year.

Thank you for all your support and help throughout the year and especially this last month. I wish you all a very happy and safe holiday.

Grade One Celebration!

A very big THANK YOU to everyone that came to share in our afternoon of personal memories. The children had worked so very hard creating their books and researching the information. They were soooo excited about having their very own memory boxes and posters too.

I was so proud of how knowledgeable and independent all the children were. I hope you enjoyed reading and listening to your child's special memories.

Please enjoy the short slide show from the day.

Thank you to everyone who shared in our 'Personal History' afternoon and end of year party celebration.

Other things that we have been doing is helping the kindergarteners make the transition to grade one. They came to us on Monday to hangout with us and we showed them round our classroom and took them to the cafeteria and had lunch together. They also asked us lots of questions about what grade one will be like. I hope we didn't scare them too much :-)

The grade ones are very, very excited about moving up to grade two. However I will miss them terribly :-(
They got to have some time in the grade two classes meeting the teachers and asking some questions about what grade two will be like. They came back very happy from their visit and really looking forward to their new adventure.

Wow, Only half a day of school left for this year! Where has the time gone. I have had such a fun last week back with my awesome class!

Gymnastics

Dear Parents,

On Tuesday the 6th of June we will be holding an extra Gymnastics assembly with students from KG to Grade 4 performing. Parents are especially welcome to join us in this celebration of learning. The assembly will be held in the main Gym, next to the swimming pool, and will start at 2pm.

We look forward to seeing you there.

All the best,

Mr Ben and Mr Andy

Friday Closure

Dear Parents,

Following Mr. Barry and Ms. Paula's messages, regarding home learning activities for Friday, June 2nd, please help your child check in with me by sending a simple email message at the beginning of the day. I will be checking my emails from 9-11am. I will record their attendance by 11am latest.

Students will take home an A3 sheet titled 'Timeline of My Day'. They should draw pictures for each box and write at least 2-3 sentences about each picture on their timeline. This activity is simple enough for students to complete independently; however, you can help your child by talking to your child about their day and helping them record their favourite activities in the order they happened.

Please help remind your child to bring their completed timelines back to school on Monday, June 5th.

I will be back in the classroom from Monday 5th June. I am very much looking forward to seeing my class and being back with my family.

We have had to reschedule our class party (happy, because now I can be there to help celebrate!) So new date is Tuesday 7th June from 12:45 - 1:45 followed by a gymnastics assembly in the gym.

Thank you for your help and understanding with all of this!

Kind regards,
The Grade 1 Team

*Please note this is also posted on the class blog.

Check us out!

Over the past few weeks we have been inquiring into our personal histories. We have been learning a lot about each other and sharing many of our memories. Mr Jon has been working with us on asking the right questions. We learnt that 'thin' questions only give us a small amount of information or a yes/no answer. Whereas 'thick' questions give us a story and lots of information. We have been working hard on coming up with questions ourselves and over the past few weeks I'm sure the children have been asking you all questions about when they were younger. We have had some hilarious moments and fantastic stories from the children!

Some of the children shared their favourite things that they had when they were a baby or toddler. Great job taking action you guys :-)

For the children to really know what they are learning about we looked at what history means and what change is. We spent time brainstorming these concepts and also sorting and ordering photos in a variety of ways.

Here we are sorting our photos in different ways:

We also took a trip to the school butterfly garden to see if we could spot some things that change. We found lots. Please take a look under your child's individual page to see the short video they made of what they saw.

Continuing with change and time, in maths we have been learning to tell the time. We have been practicing to the hour, half past, quarter past and quarter to. We had fun testing each other.

Gymnastics has been a highlight for the children during PE. Take a look at what they have been up to with the Grade 2 students.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Hands On!

In Maths we have been learning about fractions: whole, half, quarter and sharing items equally. We have had gummy bears to help us share with our friends, shapes to cut in halves and quarters and learning which piece of pizza you would like for yourself! Plus the big question was how many friends do you want to share with? A lot of friends or just a few? After putting this to the test with our gummy bears the whole class came to the general consequences that they would rather share with just one friend. Why? Because then you get to have more too :-)

We also looked at capacity and had to figure out which cup, jug or glass was the fullest, emptiest and closest to hall full. The children enjoyed recognising, discussing and colouring the correct quantities. We also did a lot of estimating with capacity and weighing objects. We had a lot of fun with trying to balance the scales and predict what was going to weigh more or less.

Have a great weekend everyone!
